What is Infertility?

infertility; It is the situation where couples under the age of 35 cannot achieve pregnancy despite 1 year of regular and unprotected sexual intercourse. If you are over the age of thirty-five, this period is defined as 6 months.

What is meant by regular and unprotected sexual intercourse is sexual relations that occur 3 times a week, paying particular attention to ovulation days, without any contraceptive method (birth control pill, condom, spiral…) to prevent pregnancy.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF INFERTILITY?

85% of couples achieve pregnancy within 1 year with regular sexual intercourse. Infertility is seen in approximately 10-15% of couples of reproductive age. Sometimes it may depend on a single factor, and sometimes it may depend on many factors. The incidence of infertility increases with age and the decrease in reproductive cells.

Women's reasons;

Thyroid hormone disorders

hyperprolactinemia,

Ovulation (ovulation) irregularities,

Endometriosis (chocolate cyst),

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

Having adhesions in the uterus (Asherman syndrome)

Fallopian tubes are closed

Low egg reserve, (Amh)

advanced age,

Early menopause.

Causes of men;

Congenital obstruction of sperm ducts,

Varicocele

Problems with sperm morphology (shape deformities),

Low sperm count

Poor sperm quality

No sperm in the semen

exposure to chemicals,

Alcohol and cigarette consumption.

Apart from these male and female factors, no cause can be found in approximately 10-15% of couples and this group is called "Unexplained infertility".

HOW ARE INFERTIL COUPLES EVALUATED?

 Infertility evaluation consists of the following steps.

-Story and gynecological examination

-Sperm analysis

- Evaluation of ovarian reserve (with FSH, AMH and antral follicle count in ultrasonography on the 3rd day of menstruation)

-Detection of ovulation (Progesterone on the 21st day of menstruation)

- Evaluation of structural abnormalities of the uterus (evaluation of the patency of the tubes, evaluation of deformities in the uterus)

Following the detailed evaluation of the infertile couple, the treatment plan for the cause revealed is arranged according to the couple. Methods such as stimulation of eggs (ovulation induction), vaccination and in vitro fertilization are used in the treatment.
