What is NIPT (Free fetal DNA test)?

Free fetal DNA test (cell free DNA test), non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) and extracellular DNA test is a test that performs genetic analysis from the baby's extracellular DNA that mixes with the mother's blood.

The baby's extracellular DNA passes into the mother's blood through the placenta. In the blood sample taken from the mother, the baby's DNA must have passed into the mother's blood at a certain rate. Therefore, it should be done after 10.  week of pregnancy. It can be done throughout the entire pregnancy. 

This test looks at Down syndrome, trisomy 13 and trisomy 18. There are also tests that look at X, Y chromosome diseases, other chromosomes, and microdeletion syndromes.

The rate of detecting Down Syndrome in the double screening test is 90 % on average, 60-70% on average in the triple test, 80% in the 4-test, while it is over 99% in the free fetal DNA test. Although the free fetal DNA test has a very high detection value (like 99%), it is still a screening test, not a diagnostic test. In other words, if an abnormality is detected as a result of the fetal DNA test, the result must be confirmed by performing amniocentesis (taking a sample from the baby's water)  or CVS (taking a sample from the baby's partner).

Today, this test is not performed in any laboratory in Turkey. However, the blood taken from the branches of laboratories abroad or through intermediary companies in Turkey is sent to the laboratory to be studied and the results are obtained in an average of 10 days.
